IMO there are several things that make Thaumcraft seem less useful than other mods. So probably not vital to get into, unless you like the mod or want one of the specific wand foci or something. Either doing things differently, or perhaps better, with a smattering of random tools/gadgets on the side. I'm not familiar with the most recent Sky Factory versions, but I'd guess it just gives an alternative path for many different things (Breeding animals, growing crops, moving items, flying, tools, etc.).
